Not everyone can afford an helicopter to enjoy birdeye views of Amsterdam. Pity, because Amsterdam is beautiful from up there. How we know? One word. Rooftops. What is better than enjoying the sunset, or stars, from high up a building with a fancy drink in your hand? Right, not much. So here they are: the best rooftops to hang out at in Amsterdam.
Let’s start at the beginning, assuming you just arrived in Amsterdam by train. You step out of Central Station, take the (free!) ferry to Amsterdam North, which is an experience itself, and from far ahead you’ll see the A’DAM tower. If you take the elevator to the roof of that tower, you’ll get to restaurant/bar Madam. And higher, to the rooftop with restaurant Moon. True daredevils can try the huge swing that gets your feet over the edge of the building. Do not drop your bags while you’re swinging. You can do that at Lock Luggage storage.
Skylounge Hilton DoubleTree (Centre)
Next up is the Skylounge rooftop of Hilton DoubleTree hotel. You take the ferry back to Central Station and from there walk ten minutes heading east. If you are lucky you will find live jazzmusic. You will definitely enjoy your fancy drinks more when looking across the IJ-canal.
NEMO rooftop(Centre) If you walk even further East, you’ll see a funny shaped building floating on the water. That is NEMO, museum of science. A blast for kids, but honestly, we like to go there as well. If not for our inner geek, then because a lot of fun sporty bootcamps take place on the roof. The roof is basically one big staircase, so perfect for a tough HIIT training. Feeling lazy? The roof is also a rooftopterrace, so you can enjoy your coffee here as well. Oosterdok 2
Volkshotel/ Canvas op de 7e (East) The Volkshotel is the building where, back in the days, one of Netherlands biggest newspapers was settled. Now it’s a superhip club, hotel and restaurant with an even more hip roofterrace. Fun fact: on Sundays, if you are a guest of the restaurant, you can enjoy the hottub and enjoy the view over the Amstel river while you get your soak on. Like we said, it’s a club. Go check for parties held at Club Canvas. It’s worth it, believe us. Wibautstraat 150
Zoku (East) If you’re looking for some peace and quiet in this busy city, go to Zoku. Their rooftopterrace is green, zen and perfect for some coffee and reading. In the evening Zoku hosts jazznights on the regular. It’s like attending a party in a garden, but way cooler. Weesperstraat 105
W Hotel/ Mr. Porter (Centre) This rooftop is probably the most Instagramworthy one on the list. Why? Well, for starters, there is a pool. Second, a lot of famous people and influencers come here to hang (and be seen). It’s situated in the middle of the city centre and in the evening the lounge transforms in a fancy club. So get out your heels or shiny shoes and dance the night away. So drop your luggage at Lock Luggage Storage one block away from the W Hotel and have fun! Spuistraat 175
Floor 17 (West)
On the 17th floor of Hotel Ramada Apollo, you’ll find restaurant and bar Floor 17 (get it?). From here, you have the prettiest sight on whole of Amsterdam. Sometimes, when the weather is nice, you can watch movies on the roof as well with Rooftop Movie Nights. How romantic is that?! If you’re less of a romantic you can, starting from the 1st of december, iceskate! On a 75m2 rink, mind you. It won’t get any better than that.
